Eagles Reunite Update #2
August 11, 2020
Dear Graded Community,
Greetings and welcome to the new school year!
On Friday, August 7, São Paulo Governor João Doria announced an earliest potential school reopening date of October 7 at 35% occupancy. He also spoke about the possibility of school reopening for recuperação (recovery) and tutoring sessions as soon as September 8. Graded is aiming to reopen on October 7 but not beforehand. However, we acknowledge that the October 7 date is tentative.
We are taking a measured, long-term approach in response to this pandemic. The health and safety of our students, faculty, and staff are paramount. Once we open our campus, our desire is to remain open as long as possible, if not permanently. To this end, we must take the necessary time to ensure that our community is trained and adequately prepared to follow all precautionary measures.
To add a layer of complexity, São Paulo Mayor Bruno Covas has said he has not yet made a decision regarding school reopening and that the return date would be driven by prevailing health conditions and recommendations by the city’s health department. Mayor Covas, who possesses authority over the operation of city schools, participated in an online meeting with business leaders on Friday.
“We are here analyzing the data to take it very carefully, with complete peace of mind,” Mayor Covas stated. “We are preparing the municipal network for resumption, be it in October, November or December, or next year.”
In preparation for our tentative campus reopening, Graded will conduct faculty and staff training. Faculty will participate in a 9-day intensive Teaching in a COVID Environment Training Program, which will include personal protective equipment and social distancing practices. Faculty training is tentatively planned for the following dates.
- Lower School Faculty: September 23, 24, 25
- Middle School Faculty: September 28, 29, 30
- High School Faculty: October 1, 2, 5
Have a wonderful week, and I look forward to seeing you “from a distance.”
